Harvard Library
Project Context
The Dumbarton Oaks Library renovation represented a unique challenge: modernizing one of the world's premier research libraries in Byzantine, Pre-Columbian, and Garden & Landscape Architecture studies while preserving its historic character and ensuring the protection of irreplaceable collections.
This comprehensive 30-month project encompassed complete infrastructure upgrades, climate control systems essential for manuscript preservation, advanced security systems, accessibility improvements, and the integration of modern digital research facilities—all accomplished while the library maintained limited operations.
Working closely with curators, conservators, and rare book specialists, Landmark Logix developed and executed a phased approach that prioritized collection safety, minimized disruption to ongoing research, and delivered a state-of-the-art facility that honors the library's scholarly mission.

Delivery Challenge
Modernizing a world-class research library housing over 250,000 rare volumes demanded an extraordinarily careful approach. The Dumbarton Oaks Library is home to irreplaceable manuscripts, rare books, and archival materials spanning Byzantine, Pre-Columbian, and Garden & Landscape studies—collections that are sensitive to temperature fluctuations, humidity changes, dust, and vibration. Any misstep during construction could result in permanent damage to items of incalculable scholarly and cultural value.
Beyond collection protection, the project required upgrading decades-old mechanical, electrical, and plumbing infrastructure within a historic building whose architectural character had to be preserved. The team needed to integrate modern digital research capabilities, achieve full ADA accessibility, and deliver enhanced climate control—all while keeping limited library operations running so that visiting scholars could continue their work.
